6 Things to Look for When Outsourcing Curriculum & Training
1. Student retention is ensured.
I was talking to the owner of a Ninja curriculum company at a Conference a few years ago and I asked him “What happens when the student completes the 12 week program?” He said “Do it again and make it harder.” If I’m going to invest my hard earned money in a service that is supposed to save me time, and ultimately money, I don’t want to “do it again and make it harder.” I want it done for me. In any program you purchase, look for a multi-level system with enough room for your athletes to progress for years to come. This keeps your students engaged and excited for the next session and will ensure their retention in the process.
2. Cheaper isn’t always better.
When you invest in a piece of equipment for your gym, do you try to find the cheapest possible option, regardless of quality and safety? Of course you don’t. When you buy a new car, do you tell the salesman, go ahead and remove the emergency parking brake or the right turn signal so that you can save a buck? Not likely. The same is true when you invest in programming. You’ll often find that companies creating curriculum often have lower prices because they sacrifice things like support staff and google presence. If you have a problem or a question, you want to be able to talk to a human. What’s the purpose of advertising on the internet if no one can find you?
3. Employee insurance.
Does the company have enough ongoing training to keep your coaches engaged or provide any additional training? The tribe mentality is so important. If they feel like they belong to something, they will stay engaged longer. If they feel like they are being heard and their personal development is valued, they will stay employed longer. And, finally, if they feel they are doing well at their job and are affirmed, they will bring others to work, too!
4. Ease of use.
Millennials don’t have desktop computers. I’m not even sure they have email anymore? It’s all DM-ing and Tik-Tocking now… Our biggest generation of coaches uses their smartphone for everything. A curriculum program with an app is ideal so that coaches can learn the lesson plans, review the training videos, and check out the latest resources, all from the convenience of their phone. If there are multiple steps to get to what they need to perform their job well, that will become a large roadblock.
5. No extra fees.
If you have to spend thousands of extra dollars on equipment, it isn’t built to last. You want the ability to repurpose the equipment that you have in your gym. Look for a program that encourages the use of your current mats and blocks and also allows for upgrades to capitalize on the growth of the program, once you’re ready. This allows you the space to see if the program is truly a good fit for you, at your own pace. Curriculum that fits with your gym’s current set up is the best way to start.
6. Trust the source.
When I was looking for a preschool curriculum option for my gyms, I made sure that I went with a trusted source. Someone who knows the industry and has been in it a long time. Our coaches and program directors know how to set up a preschool lesson plan, but do we want them to? Why reinvent the wheel and pay our coaches admin time when we can support within our industry and know the product will be great, every single week.
